On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit arrived in dramatic fashion.  This week’s Bible reading from Acts 2:1-21 describes a violent wind, divided tongues as of fire, spontaneous language, amazement and questions.  Take a look at this artwork from Jesus Mafa.  What emotions do you see expressed in the artist’s rendition of Pentecost?

Pentecost - Jesus Mafa

I see joy, concern, amazement, surprise, fear, awe, confusion, curiousity, glee and even indifference.  What emotions do you see? What emotions do you experience when thinking about the Holy Spirit’s dramatic arrival.  What about emotions you feel with the thought of the spirit’s presence?

I see a small room filled with people dressed in flowing robes, woven grass mats on the floor, some ritual objects, a jar, bowls of water, fruit cut in half, a drum, a man with a cain, a man dancing with joy, a woman in light blue robes (usually the symbolic color for the virgin Mary) sitting with arms out and palms turned upward (she appears to be levitating), a man with wide eyes, pushing open the door to enter the room.

They are looking at a bright ball of light radiating at the top of the room (at first I mistook it for a light bulb), But, of course, it's the Holy Spirit.

Artisticlly: Formally, I see diagonal lines, indicating dynamic motion, the circular placement of the figures wearing volumes of fabric, draped and flowing with curvilinear light and shadow, indicating dynamic motion. Muted but complimentary colors (blue & orange) and high contrast between lights and darks create a dynamic effect.

I see a picture of a numinous experience: filled with joy, awe, amazement, fear, and fascination.

Love,
Susannah

Notice the flames of fire, resting on everyone but the women in blue. The man in white, just behind her, seems to be on his way to some new found purpose. Perhaps a call to ministry? The women in white just behind him seems distraught? They are both clothed in the same white cloth...are they married? Has she just realized what his call might cost her and their relationship? Is the cost too much for her? Back to the women in blue...her placement and posture suggests a place of leadership. Is the Spirit supplanting her position? There is much going on in this wonderful picture. Thanks Kirk!

Wow! I didn't notice the flames of fire over each head but the woman in blue. [I think she symbolizes Mary, the mother of Jesus].

Maybe the "woman in white robes" is blinded by the light; as she is holding her hand over her eyes (?).

and the robes on the "man in white robes" look like they are morphing into angel wings!
