Bio:
Reverend Dearthrice "Dea" DeWitt is a native of Albany, New York. He completed his undergraduate education at Colgate University and received his Masters of Divinity and Masters of Theology degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary. He served as seminary intern at All Souls Bethlehem Church in Brooklyn, Associate Pastor of First Congregational Church of Minneapolis, UCC, New Jersey project director for Families Against Mandatory Minimums, a not-for-profit agency focused on criminal sentencing reform, and Pastor of First Congregational Church of Poughkeepsie, NY. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, his many gifts include an emphasis on spirituality and worship, a passion for social justice, strong program skills, and a warm and energetic personality. Rev. DeWitt places spirituality and the liturgical life of the church square at the center of his ministry. Having been raised in the AME-Zion and National Baptist traditions before joining the United Church of Christ in seminary, Rev. DeWitt believes that worship should be reverential and inspiring and that the church should help members develop their spiritual lives. Rev. DeWitt is also committed to translating beliefs into concrete social action. At the center of his understanding of ministry is that "local churches must connect their theological understanding and resources with the social ills (and) needs they feel God has empowered them to transform." He has a personal passion for issues of racial equality and justice, and serves as a UCC disability ministry advocate. He also has an interest in world mission, having spent a summer during seminary doing missionary work in Ghana, West Africa. Rev. DeWitt's approach to ministry is one that emphasizes "the priesthood of all believers." He explains that, "God has given spiritual gifts to every member of the parish," and understands his role as pastor to be one of helping Christians discern and cultivate their gifts rather than doing everything himself. Rev. DeWitt’s approach to community-building often takes the form of Bible studies and other small church groups. He also takes seriously the need for a disciplined spiritual life apart from his pastoral work. Rev. DeWitt is therefore a novice and chief scribe of the Community of Liberated Spirits, an interdenominational religious community within the Emergent Church movement. Outside of the church, Rev. DeWitt enjoys travel, reading, listening to music, and working with computers. He has a black belt in martial arts. He also writes in his profile that his "interests include engaging in social justice work and advocacy (and) stimulating interracial dialogue and new approaches to race." Rev. DeWitt's daughter is eleven years old and lives in Albany.

Opening the Bible
We believe that when you explore the Bible, you don't have to check your mind at the door—or your curiosity. Scripture can do great harm when used as a weapon, but it also opens a door to the story of God's loving relationship with humanity.

We invite you to an interactive space for spiritual inquiry and exploration. Learn about new and ancient spiritual practices, and share your spiritual journey with others on a quest like yours.

Prayer Chapel
End your day with a simple, quiet, meditative experience of evening prayer. We gather in our virtual Prayer Chapel every night at 9 p.m. (Eastern). At all other times, you're welcome to post your prayer requests in our Prayer Chapel Forum.
