Agreed, Jack. (Sorry, I couldn't get the cursor to go underneath the quote box). Personally, I didn't find the original opinion offensive. It was just that--an opinion. Opinions don't usually offend me...how they are acted upon might, however. Rebecca

While I am willing to concede not all people in academia are closed minded. There unfortunately far too many examples supression of the conservative point of view, under the guise of "We must not make people feel uncomfortable". The short hand is usually called "political correctness". Unfortunately, this supression does NOT end the offensive point of view, my concern is that the suppressed point of view will reappear in more noxious and dangerous forms. Think Neo-Nazi, KKK and other hate groups. While the original opinion was only offesive, the suppression allows these more dangerous groups to co-opt and pervert the point of view into something worse.

Am I a Prophet? No just observant. Remember the rhetoric attempting to relate all opposition to Illegal immigration as xenophobic and unfit for public discussion? Once again most opposition is NOT against immigration, it is against to the violation US immigration law.

| | More activity for Klan, similar groups | | White supremacists are beginning to join forces and turning their focus toward stirring anti-immigration sentiment. | | By Erin Texeira , The Associated Press Denver Post | | Article Last Updated:02/06/2007 12:19:29 AM MST |
| New
York - Huge street protests made millions of immigrants more visible
and powerful last year, but they also seem to have revived a hateful
counterforce: white supremacists. Groups linked to the Ku Klux Klan, skinheads and
neo-Nazis grew significantly more active, holding rallies, distributing
leaflets and increasing their presence on the Internet - much of it
focused on stirring anti-immigrant sentiment... |

Not exactly, I was recapitulating the relavent portion of my original post, in order to make the point of the new post more clear.

On A Light note.
For the "unempowered man", we offer this:
A Man's Prayer
"I'm a man, but I can change, if I have to, I guess"
Red Green
Mr. Green is also known for this quote:
"If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy"
See you all at the Possum Lodge "Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati" (When All Else Fails, Play Dead)

Here's a great quote :)
"Not by hating hatred ceases In this world of tooth and claw; Love alone from hate releases -- This is the Eternal Law."
It's a poetic translation made by Francis Story of Buddha's saying from Dhammapada v. 5 :) |

I have enjoyed reading your entries. I have been looking for some works on spirituality . You all have certainly helped me in my quest. L'Engle is one of my favorites and I did not know of her philosophical books. Thank-you all very much.
At the moment I can not think of a favorite quote, but will try to come up with something next time.

love Pam I rarely think of quotes of the top of my head, LOL. I hope you will think of this as a repository for quotes as you come across them. :-) For example, I came here tonight to share this one:
Today I was listening to a podcast of a sermon given by Stephen Sterner (Interim Minister at Claremont United Church of Christ). I'm several weeks "behind" but I find that the best sermons are timeless and resonate no matter when you listen to them. At any rate, I'd like to offer a quote from that sermon:
The "now" of Jesus is not achieved by nodding assent to sermons that affirm your predjudices without challenging your assumptions or changing your life.

As our ancestors would say when quoting Jesus, "Thus sayeth the Lord..."
16 “And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you." -- Matthew 6:16-18 NRSV
No matter what you give up for Lent, remember Easter and our Lord’s resurrection is why we sacrifice for Lent. Have a blessed Ash Wednesday.

Here's one that came on a greeting card. The words were printed in a spiral, over a pair of hands holding another pair of hands.

Poem by Mary Oliver, from her new book, Thirst:
I would be good--oh, I would be upright and good. To what purpose? To be shining not sinful, not wringing out of the hours petulance, heaviness, ashes. To what purpose? Hope of heaven? Not that. But to enter the other kingdom: grace and imagination,
and the multiple sympathies: to be as a leaf, a rose, a dolphin, a wave rising slowly then briskly out of the darkness to touch the limpid air, to be God's mind's servant, loving with the body's sweet mouth-its kisses, its words--- everything. |

From Marva Dawn's book How Shall We Worship
"How different our daily lives would be if we perceived them not as an endless round of chores to accomplish, but as a continuing variety of opportunities to bring an offering to the Lord!"
OK, not the most profound or poetic quote out there, but still good food for thought for life. I'm one of the many task-oriented people in our society, governed by never-ending "to-do" lists. (I realized recently that I even fall into that with my prayer- whoops, can't say Amen yet- I forgot to pray for Aunt Bea.) It's easy to mentally divide the sacred from the secular (I'm just running errands- that doesn't involve God) when really every moment of our lives is sacred. |

Here's a poem by David Whyte: SELF-PORTRAIT It doesn't interest me if there is one God or many gods. I want to know if you belong or feel abandoned, if you can know despair or see it in others. I want to know if you are prepared to live in the world with its harsh need to change you. If you can look back with firm eye, saying this is where I stand. I want to know if you know how to melt into that fierce heat of living, falling toward the center of your longing. I want to know if you are willing to live, day by day, with the consequence of love and the bitter unwanted passion of your sure defeat. I have heard, in that fierce embrace, even the gods speak of God. ~ David Whyte ~ (River Flow) |

Here's a song which I really like :)
Amarantine by Enya
You know when you gave your love away It opens your heart, everything is new And you know time will always find a way To let your heart believe it's true You know love is everything you say A whisper, a word, promises you give You feel it in the heartbeat of the day You know this is the way love is
Chorus Amarantine Amarantine Amarantine Love is always love
You know love may sometimes make you cry So let the tears go, they will flow away For you know love will always let you fly How far a heart can fly away
Chorus
You know when love's shining in your eyes It may be the stars fallen from above And you know love is with you when you rise For night and day belong to love |

C.S. Lewis on Jesus
You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God.

| A quotable moment from Raines, the new NBC show:
Raines: How are you doing?
Charlie's widow: I'm cursing God less.
Raines: Well, don't stop completely. I'm sure it's a welcome change from all those people, uh, sucking up and asking for stuff.

No child, Muslim or normal, should have to endure touching a ham sandwich.”--Stephen Wessler, the Executive Director of the Center for Prevention of Hate Violence
How about Mr. Wessler's implication that Muslim children are somehow NOT normal? This quote is so monumentally stupid, it is in a class by itself.
It is likely the student who put the ham sandwich on the same table as Muslims from Somilia did it to provoke a reaction. They need to be corrected and disiplined, this quote undermines those efforts. |

Here's a little variation on one we all know, that I have post-it noted on my monitor:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to know...it's me. |
