| Did you watch the Monday broadcast of CNN's THE_SITUATION_ROOM (7 p.m. Eastern) that involved UCC member Barack Obama as well as other Democratic Party would-be-nominees for President in next year's election ? ? ? I will watch back the video tape later. . .Thanks for posting - - Tee Jay. |

From PERRY BACON, Jr. article for June 5 WASHINGTONPOST dot-com coverage of the Pentecost-related event (just excerpts of paragraphs 5, 6, and 8) - -
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/04/AR2007060401989.html
Only the top three candidates in the Democratic field were invited to the event. That all three attended underscores the party's efforts to win over voters interested in issues related to moral values -- particularly white Catholics, an important swing vote in recent years.
None of the candidates offered answers that strayed far from Democratic Party orthodoxy, but their openness in discussing their faith was unusual. . .
The questions were not the same for each candidate, and Obama, who of the three has spoken the most about his faith in campaign appearances, said the least about his religion in this forum. He instead discussed his belief that evil exists in the world and said "there is a moral element" to his view that pay for corporate chief executives has become excessive. He repeatedly invoked the biblical phrase "I am my brother's keeper."
also at CNN dot-com here's the transcript (early version)

Well, I was annoyed b/c one of MY top 2 candidates was not invited. So I protested by not watching. Sojourners kind of ticked me off with this move - are these three candidates the only ones about whose faith journey we should be hearing? Frankly, I've heard more about Obama's and Hillary's faith journey than is necessary at this point; wouldn't it have been more interesting to hear about Chris Dodd's faith story, or Bill Richardson's? (Bill R., by the way, is a practicing Catholic who is a champion of a woman's right to choose and is probably the 2nd most progressive candidate on the issue of same-sex marriage [and I would put only Dennis Kucinich ahead of him].)
It is WAY, WAY too early to say that these three are the only viable candidates, because I live in Iowa and I have received several mailings just this week from three OTHER candidates who I think are in serious contention. They are certainly raising the most money, but that is not an indicator of anything...yet.
FWIW, I am not a CNN fan anyway, so this was just another reason to sigh and watch CSI reruns. |

I would have liked to have seen more of the candidates involved in this event as well, but I also think we need to take into account the reality of getting something that reflects mainline Christianity on the air in any form whatsoever. I'm guessing that CNN was only willing to give Jim Wallis enough time to give the current Democratic leaders 15 minutes each. Fox would probably give fundamentalists all the time they wanted...wait, they do, but acknowledging there is such a thing as progressive Christianity and that someone might actually be interested in such views is a huge step. The UCC can't even BUY advertising time on certain major networks, you think they are going to GIVE away large amounts of time to non-fundamentalists? It's a start. Hopefully in the future CNN or another network will give Sojourners a larger block of time.
I also live in Iowa, and in the past few days our household has received at least four phone calls inquiring as to which candidate we would support if the caucuses were to be held today. Both my wife and I have refused to give them an answer. It's way to early, and I refuse to make a decision at this point. FWIW, I think Richardson has the most creative, and funny, commercials. |

Thanks for responding! I have a question for those of you in Iowa: do you think that the January 2008 Caucuses will get eclipsed by larger states moving their primaries to Jan. 29 and Feb. 5 -- my own state (Michigan) will move from a formerly expected March Caucus to a Feb. 5 one (Super Tuesday 2008) and I presume it will be a partisan ballot at the polling places where each vote is separately tabulated. All of you in Iowa I understand must reach some sort of precinct "consensus" and the first ballot results as far as a split don't really matter since the majority receiving candidate at the end has "won" all of the votes for the entire precinct - - correct?
By the way, will you be traveling to the Connecticut Synod where I understand Candidate Barack Obama will address the UCC large, large group ? ? ? God bless you, Tee Jay |

I think Andy is hinting that even with the participation of a member of a UCC congregation, this is not really a "UCC" topic. I will just briefly answer Tee Jay that there is a difference between a caucus and a primary, and being the first caucus still sets Iowa apart. That being said, I feel that other states moving their primaries earlier will dilute the effect of the Iowa caucus, simply from the standpoint that the attention of the candidates will be diluted. In other years candidates have been able to focus on Iowa and New Hampshire, and have other states on the back burner.
I would love to be going to General Synod this year, for many reasons, but it just isn't going to work in my schedule this time around. |
