The local UCC here in Southwest MI will observe Pentecost with the anthem "Let There Be Peace on Earth" and wearing of items of red clothing - - do forum members have other suggestions that are annual observances where you worship?  THANKS !

Whitsunday-Pentecost

Whitsunday, or Pentecost, is the seventh Sunday after Easter. For Christians, this commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit in tongues of flame upon the apostles. Because the disciples were said to have begun baptizing thousands of people soon afterward, Whitsunday or Pentecost became the traditional time for baptisms. Whit, a corruption of white, refers to the white baptismal garments worn on this day. It is also a time of spring festivals throughout Europe, with echoes of pagan spring rites such as morris dancing and dressing a young boy in greenery (Jack-in-the-Green) and marching him through the village.

A few years ago a previous pastor, arranged for a fire-eater to perform during the Call tro Worship. The tongues of fire and the whooshing sound really dramatzed the Acts 2 paasage.

Also looking at my avatar, you see my Pentecost ball cap (see the tongues of fire and red shirt).

Several years ago in my home church--not UCC about 30 of us who spoke at least well enough to read a foreign language--all stood up and began reciting John 3:16 each in our own lanquage--we went through it three times and then did it in unison in English. Karl

This morning, my sermon, based on the lectionary-reading from Acts, was titled, "BAM" .

Several times, I raised my arm up-and-back, Emeril Ligase-style...and as I thrust it suddenly-forward, folks yelled-out, "BAM! Let's kick-it-up-a-notch!!!"

And that, my friends, is what happened on that first Christian Pentecost! BAM!

I'M ONLY VISITING THIS PLANET!
