Can anyone on the forum tell me if there was a UCC Congregation in or nearby Friday's Tornado devastated town in SW Kansas?  It is quite a rural area thereabouts according to Dennis McKenney (resident and state legislator interviewed May 7 on NPR's ALL_THINGS_CONSIDERED).  He made a few references to the Friends Church in the vicinity and getting a pastor matched up with a list of those severely injured and killed so as to expedite pastoral counseling and help with grieving survivors.  Thanks for checking and Posting!    Tee Jay (I live in SW Michigan). . .

To find the answer to your question: click on "Find A Church" in the red menu bar at the top of this page. That will take you to an interactive site where you can enter the name of the city or zip code and a mile radius, for the nearest UCC church.

teejayniles, always check out ucc.org/disaster for the latest disaster response information from the UCC. There are updates there about the Kansas tornado. According to the report, there are no UCC congregations in the affected area, but the church will be working with its ecumenical partners to help out, as it normally does in any national or international disaster situation.

I took time to google "Greensburg KS churches"

Here is an edited list, I eliminated addresses, contact information and Sunday School and Worship times.

When a pastor's name was included, I nincluded it hopefully this will help as we say our prayers.

Bible Baptist Pastor Wesley Carlton

Christian Church

Faith Tabernacle Pastor Willard Olinger.

First Baptist

Greensburg Mennonite Church Pastor Jeff Blackburn

Peace Lutheran Pastor Pastor Timothy Henning

St. Joseph Catholic

United Methodist Church Pastor Gene McIntosh

TO: Jack

Thanks for editing down what you have found - - as I wrote originally, the layperson who was also a state legislator was mindful that the local clergy would be acting in a coordinated way to counsel those who lost loved ones or sustained severe injuries/trauma/stress disorders.  I'm sure that groups like the Church World Service will also respond beyond what the Red Cross will bring to the disaster aftermath.  Your partial listing didn't mention the Friends (Quaker) that Representative Dennis McKenney gave from his immediate awareness as "on the scene". . .

With appreciation for the prayer and faith-response-ability help that gives all of us in this forum, Tee Jay.

Tornado damage in KS 'unbelievable'

Faith groups plan response, express shock at devastation.
May 7, 2007

Information received via all of our local news media reports have not exaggerated the destruction experienced by the people of Greensburg, Kansas. The United Church of Christ does not have any churches in the area impacted. The UCC will be working ecumenically with Church World Service and other ecumenical partners in response to the EF-5 tornadoes that struck the Mid-west this past weekend. Will Best and Mike Lake, UCC Kansas-Oklahoma Conference, Disaster Response Coordinators are in contact with the Kansas VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) and will represent us on the long term recovery committee. Will and Mike both have requested that no material donations be collected or sent; they request that financial contributions be sent to the One Great Hour of Sharing special fund, Emergency USA. This will allow the UCC to support the long term recovery efforts to assist with rebuilding homes.
