I am spearheading a Black History Month Celebration at my church. While elements of African American culture are woven into worship on a regular basis, this is the first or the first in a long time attempt to do a Black History Month celebration. We are a 99% white congregation in a town with similar demographics. I would like to find out what others have done or what ideas you have.
Thanks.

Pamela, here at the UCC Church House in Cleveland, we've got a display of children's drawings about moments in black history from a local public grade school, and the staff committee that coordinates the observance in our building also sends out a great daily email with a picture and bio of a leading personality from black history.

I really like the idea of daily emails. That will definitely take some planning, so I will put it on the agenda for next year.

We could also plan to have Sunday School students do drawings on black history and post those. I do not know whether the Sunday School curriculum includes black history month, so we may have to work on developing some lessons for next year.

What we have decided to do so far is that we will do a different order of worship. The organist will do an African American spiritual prelude and the choir will do either an African American spiritual or gospel song for the choral introit and anthem.  We are replacing the children's sermon with youth presentations. A couple will do readings of UCC firsts that deal directly with people of African descent and we will also have youth reading poetry written by African American poets.
