It's time for annual secularization of the "Shopping Season" battles to begin again. Does your church decorate with religious red and green lights or secular white? Even worse, do they twinkle? The real question is what segments of society's traditions are deemed too demean other segments and what segments traditions should be included in the name of diversity?

A special task force in a Colorado city has recommended banning red and green lights at the Christmas holiday because they fall among the items that are too religious for the city to sponsor.

"Some symbols, even though the Supreme Court has declared that in many contexts they are secular symbols, often still send a message to some members of the community that they and their traditions are not valued and not wanted. We don't want to send that message," Seth Anthony, a spokesman for the committee, told the Fort Collins, Colo., Coloradoan.

What will be allowed are white lights and "secular" symbols not associated "with any particular holiday" such as icicles, unadorned greenery and snowflakes, the task force said. See the link below for more details

I wasn't aware of the sacred vs. secular nature of the colors of lights. (I'll admit that I haven't read the article that you provided a link to, so I don't what I've missed there.) I love white lights in the church-- they blend in with the beautiful candlelight that brightens the sanctuary on Christmas Eve, symbolizing the Light of Christ in the world.

My knowledge of the history of Christmas traditions is spotty. Personally, red and green "feels" more secular, white feels more sacred.

Frankly, Linda neither am I, aware of why red and green lights is more religious. I find it a visual allusion to holly secular. If fact, most churches I know of use white lights on there Crisomons tree. It was the city council that made the decree. My point in making the post was every year the “separation of church and state” crowd gets more and more bizarre in what it considers “religious” as opposed to safely secular.

The reason I included the link was to allow those who are interested to get more detail and verify the veracity of my claims. Something a conservative is challenged at all points to do.
